Europe is also built in the national parliaments

Following this MEMO from the Commission, inviting the national parliament to get more invlved in the EU affairs…

As strange as it might seem, the national parliaments are key elements in the implementation of the European policies. First because they have a role to play in the subsidiarity framework, but also because they are the actors of the transcription of European legislation into the national law.

In that respect, what is decided at the European Union level is not directly imposed on the citizen – like some people like to pretend – but go through the filter of a national institutions, most of the time elected on a national program without a huge European perspective.

Next time someone tells you “It’s all the fault of Brussels”, ask yourself how your national parliament decided to adapt the European laws and what role did it play in the legislative process…
